Mayan Ruins, Tulum, Mexico

After a couple of weeks in Seattle, it was time for more adventures abroad.  This time it’s to Tulum, Mexico to learn how to scuba dive.  My girlfriend is a diver and convinced me it would be something I should give a try. Looking around for places to take my PADI certification, relatively easy to get to, and someplace I’d want to spend ten days, I landed in Tulum.  The trip down was a direct flight from Seattle to Cancun and then bus from Cancun to Tulum.  Both were booked in advance and were straightforward.  There are a number of flights from Seattle to Tulum but none of them were direct.

Getting down here a day early, I decided to walk out to the Mayan ruins.  It was a little over an hour walk each direction and about two hours on site.  It’s an easy walk but definitely warm.  Fortunately I started early in the morning and was back at my accommodations by 12:30.

A couple of suggestions if you choose to visit the site.  First, wear sun screen.  I didn’t and got a little more color than was probably good.  And I went early and had a pretty good tan already.  Second, bring bug spray.  There were a bunch of aggressive biting gnats as well as a few mosquitos.  And finally, take a photo of the site layout when you arrive (or poach it from my photos).  It will help you make sure you see the entire site.

Some photos of the site are below.
