Casablanca to Fez, Morocco

After three days back at Kelly’s, it was time to get back on the road.  This time headed back to Africa for a 2.5 month trip with Oasis Overland.  The tour is starting with two vehicles, 28 individuals, 2 drivers, and 1 tour leader.  The trip starts in Fez, Morocco and ends (for me) in Accra, Ghana.  Some of the individuals carry on until Cape Town, South Africa and other individuals basically circumnavigate most of Africa and end their tour in Cairo, Egypt (47 weeks later)!

Flights into Fez were roughly $500-600 more than flights into Casablanca so I opted to fly into Casablanca, spend the night, and take the train to Fez.  There is a train station right at the Casablanca airport that will bring you down to the main train station in Casablanca (Casa Voyeguers) for about $6.50.  You can also catch a train at Casa Voyeguers to Fez for $16.50 for second class or $20.00 for middle class or $24.00 for first class.  I opted to do two out of three unfortunately.  After spending the night at the airport, I arrived at the train station in time to catch the 8:30 train but was told by the ticket counter that the 10:30 train to Fez was the earliest available so I bought a second-class ticket.  This would get me into Fez well after my tour kickoff meeting.  So I tried the automated ticket kiosk and, lo and behold, I was able to get a middle class ticket for the 8:30 train.  A good learning experience.

The train was about 15 minutes late arriving in Casablanca and was almost an hour late by the time we arrived in Fez. But I still made it to the kickoff meeting with the tour group with four minutes to spare. A picture of the trucks is below.

Two Oasis Overland trucks in the background. I will be in the closest of the two.
